I did a two month, 800 mile run on the AT last year wearing a pair of Merrell Convertibles with Spanco Hiker inserts glued into them. No problems other than callous build up. I used Seal Skins and socks when it was cold. I live in Salt Lake now and went snow shoeing in them this winter. The only problem I had was snow build up between the snowshoes and the Seal Skins. I find the sandal/Seal Skin combo to be much warmer than any winter boot I've tried. I assume it's due to the lack of circulation restriction. The sandals, of course, work very well in the summer. I have noticed that as my load approaches 45+ pounds I feel it more in my feet. But the same is true with boots on. I just went to lighter gear and rarely go over 35 pounds max. Oh, by the way, I'm 53 years old and I've worn nothing but sandals, period, for the last 8 years. But just because it worked for me doesn't mean it will for you....try it first before you commit.
