I've used a Whisperlite, a Trangia alcohol stove, a Peak1 XTreme cartridge
stove, and various home made alcohol stoves and, for my hiking style, the
home made alcohol stove really works the best for me.  I suspect, though,
that the "best" stove depends almost entirely on how you plan to use it.

For example, the fact that the home made stove doesn't simmer and cannot be
easily put out means very, very little to me.  I know how much fuel I need
to boil my two cups of water, and I let the stove burn out.  I use a pot
cozy, so I don't need to simmer.  I've always felt that I ate very well on
the trail.  And if I really wanted to simmer, I'd just follow Ron Moak's
suggestion and bring a candle.

On the other hand, if I was cooking for a group, or if I wanted to make
pancakes in the morning, or if I cooked three meals a day, or... well, you
get the idea, then I might go with a different sort of stove.
