Reply to Mara re: PCT book --
I usually don't use these forums to promote my books, but you did ask a
particular question re: PCT books, so I wanted to let you know that Dan Smith
(my husband) and I have a book coming out in September called the Pacific
Crest Trail: A Hikers Companion. (Countryman Press) It contains exactly the
info you wrote that you were looking for. Basically, it's divided into 18
sections, each covering trail between 75 and 200 or so miles (I know that's a
wide range, but some sections of the PCT, like the 75-mile Alpine Lakes
Wilderness in Washington, make for a logicial hiking unit, while others, like
some parts of northern California are rather amorphous and hard to pin down,
and they aren't the highlights of the trail, so they got a little less
coverage.)
Each chapter gives a general route and terrain description, so that you can
decide whether that section of trail is something that might interest you,
and it covers the main landmarks, as well. Then, there is interpretive info
about what you'll see: animal and plants, ecosysytems, geographical features,
historic sites, etc. And finally, Each chapter has a how-to section that
covers seasonal info, trailheads, resupplies, gear recommendations, and a
thru-hikers corner. There are also basic maps which are deisgned to help you
visualize where the trail generally goes, resupplie,s road crossings, etc.
I decided to post this to the whole list simply because I probably would have
mentioned it anyway in September -- but since Mara brought the subject up, I
decided to address it now.
Thanks for letting me make the commercial!
