[pct-l] Data points

The "data points" that particularly got me were on the JMT, where the guide
would mention passing a certain point, followed by "and the trail shortly
crosses a meadow". More than once that meadow (or whatever) was six miles
later...
Granted, I'm used to eastern hiking with detailed trail descriptions, but
how many hikers would describe 6 miles as shortly?
It sounds like I don't want to carry an altimeter (or thermometer), the
details just make you unhappy <g>
