[pct-l] late season JMT hike

Can anyone tell me how late is too late to finish a southbound JMT hike?  I routinely hike in the Washington cascades and  mountains of Idaho well into October.  I am talking about backpacking, not winter mountaineering.  Can anyone tell me how the Sierras compare to these mountains in the fall?
