Mt. Sill (14,182 ft), but who ever heard of it? It's actually above Palisade
Basin, not Evolution Basin, just a bit north of Mather Pass and Palisade
Lakes. Your best route to scale it is from Dusy Basin, which you will cross
on the way over Bishop Pass if you choose to resupply at South Lake or
Bishop. (Which is not a bad idea if you're into this hiking stuff for the
scenery.)
My two sons, Brian and Greg, and I spent a week in Dusy and Palisade Basins
quite a bunch of years ago and took an afternoon to try Mt. Sill. We left
our packs at the foot of the cut just south of the peak and started up the
notch. Unfortunately the weather was dicey and we had to turn around
somewhere above 13,000 ft when things socked in. I still remember the wind
raking the mist and clouds over the ridge leading to the peak ahead of us,
and thinking, "We'll do it another day." However, Sill is a nontechnical
climb and a worthwhile "diversion."
I hope it will not be your only diversion on the JMT. I'm planning to hike
the JMT north to south this year, starting on July 26th. Maybe our paths
will cross. Have a good hike!
