Kinch - The ice axe question is a tough  one. Really, it depends on the 
snowpack and your starting date. Most likely you won't need one until Lone 
Pine unless you are climbing Whitney. Most Cresters seem to pick one up at 
Kennedy Meadows.
      The bugs will come between  Mojave and Kennedy Meadows and they will 
enjoy your company for at least the next 1000 miles. Say hello to them for me 
by swatting a few.
