I got ride with relative ease as there are a lot of horse-people
at the camp there plus a reasonable amount of traffic- not
as much as the Portal.

The hike is about 8 miles from Trail Pass at about 13,300'
to the Portal at about 8800' with
about 4500 feet of drop and gain on way back. There are
those famous (infamous?) 99 boring switchbacks to go
thru-- but the rest of the scenery is spectactular Sierra
classic.

Lots of traffic to Portal from Lone Pine and friends got
a ride in 5 minutes to Lone Pine.

Portal is prettier than Meadows road and the store at the Portal
has GREAT hot shower ($2.25 for 15 minutes last year) and
huge, greasy, cholestrol, fat ladden fries and burger that will
FILL an 8 inch plate to overflowing...plus other things right
there-- you can almost resupply right there at that store
w/o going into LP (they are very expensive however).

Rich-

Lone Pine/Whitney fan.
