Re: [pct-l] Filter Clogging

To R.J. Calliger calliger@infolane.com, Sending a filter ahead, that's the
idea, but how can you tell when you'll need a filter? Yet the MSR miniworks
I wrote about is very dependable and at least you will not need to get a
filter very often. Another requirement may be to get a couple O-rings sent
to you along the way. In the sorse case scenario, an MSR mini is so
inexpensive so you could get another whole unit sent if you are well
progressed along the trail. Note that in the Backpacker Magazine Spring
Equipment Edition is a good article on filters. An important point is
mentioned and that is to avoid pumping yellowish-brownish coloured water as
it will do a filter in fast, because of the small particle size. I
experienced this using an old PUR filter but I assume you could scrape off a
layer on your ceramic filter in an MSR Miniworks.
