Maybe some of you cold weather freaks can answer this question.
Blisterfree mentioned people ascending Glen Pass without using an ice axe.
How is this possible? The slope from the pothole to the pass is very steep.
I thought that the only way up would be to self-belay with the axe. This
argued for a 73-77cm axe, not a 53cm as proposed by somebody.
Is is possible to climb a slope as steep as this by kicking steps in the
soft snow?
