I left a car at Horseshoe Lake early in the morning. The ghost forest was caused by excessive carbon dioxide in the soil. No camping is allowed here, or even digging.
Then I walked over Duck Pass to the PCT below Duck Lake. I left the PCT at Upper Crater Meadow to follow the old JMT to Crater Meadows, Red Cones, and the Mammoth Pass trail.
The views from the northern Red Cone were expansive.
The junction with the Mammoth Pass trail is in the middle of the Rainbow fire area.
The sun set on Mammoth Pass, and twilight fell as I passed catch-and-release McCloud/McLeod Lake.
A fat full moon rose as I returned to Horseshoe Lake.
