There are several numbers to call for taxis in Mammoth Lakes. I tried calling them all, without success, to get to the Horseshoe Lake trailhead, for the purpose of hiking to Upper Crater Meadow on the PCT and thence to Reds Meadow and the shuttle from there back to the Mammoth Mountain Inn. So I headed out on foot on the trail to Mammoth Mountain summit, planning to go cross country from the south side to McCloud Lake. The weather to the east looked good enough at the start.
But by the time I reached Reds Lake on the west side of the mountain, things weren't looking so good.
By the south side of the mountain, I was in a white out, so I got out my compass for the first time in decades and headed off roughly southeast to cross the Mammoth Pass trails.
Light snow continued but I found McCloud Lake but didn't linger on the beach.
Lunch was fairly unpleasant, but at least there was no wind.
