I don?t need you nor others to tell me how to feel, think or live my life. No need to respond, I have unsubscribed from the PCT-L. It?s just another advancement of race baiting banter. Cheers From marmotwestvanc at hotmail.com Thu Jun 25 13:19:08 2020 From: marmotwestvanc at hotmail.com (marmot marmot) Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2020 18:19:08 +0000 Subject: [pct-l] =?utf-8?q?Deep_Breath_=E2=80=94Diversity?= Message-ID: This subject has just recently been very slightly addressed by the three major trail support organizations and the long distance hikers community in general at the two yearly Gatherings. Please everyone don?t run and hide from the discussion. My hope is that in every section of our society it is examined. We are slow to talk about race and racism and how it manifests in our sport. In this country ,inability to self reflect and tendency to run away and hide is well established. There?s a lot of talk about welcoming everyone. But results are what matters. There are finally Triple Crowners who are of some descent that is not Northern European. Finally the board of Aldhawest looks more diverse. That to me is a great beginning. The blog that I posted a link to was a first person account of one person?s true experience. Breaking this down into good people vs bad people is missing the point. We are talking about a situation that is systemic. This systemic problem is well documented and because of my skin color, I benefit. To say anything else is to be uninformed and have my head in the sand The saddest lies are the ones I tell myself. I have to bring myself up short at every turn and examine how and what I can do about it. If I?m not a part of the solution I am part of the problem. In the early years, there were fewer women hikers and it was even considered that long distance hiking was beyond our ability. Of course ridiculous, but we had to deal with those stupid attitudes. Now it is passed time to work on the inclusion problem that makes the hiking and and long distance hiking world so narrow. It?s a beginning to read the experiences of people of color out on the trail. On a different note I encountered people trying to stop me from hiking alone as a mother on the PCT with my young children. One time at the first pass south of Yosemite men were trying to convince me I shouldn?t do the John Muir trail with my daughter and I would have no idea what I was doing. This condescending remark was after I told them I?d through hiked the PCT solo in ?76 and in the ?80?s and 90?s hiked Washington 4 times by myself with my kids ages 5-8. My daughter was 9 when we were hiking Yosemite to Mt. Whitney. Nurses on my floor at the University of Washington Medical Center made every effort for me to get my 2 weeks vacation each summer for me to hike on the PCT with my kids. But fellow hikers and park service tried to convince me that I couldn?t and shouldn?t hike long distance solo with a young daughter. They inferred I wasn?t smart enough or strong enough. Even PCTA has inferred by their articles that there was no way I through hiked the PCT solo when I was 20, in 1976. How could such a young woman do it back then? (Even though she was a mountaineer and solo winter trekker). What I am trying to say is that discrimination against women, particularly young women, occurs not only in the city, but on the PCT, or any trail or mountain she might climb. Does this sound similar to what the Lightest Tread experiences? There is strong bias in our country when we cross the conventional lines...even in the wilderness. Then there is ageism. Last summer coming back from trekking through Norway I nearly didn?t make the plane out of Iceland due to being taken to a separate room to be ?closely? searched. An older woman with a well used backpack...what is she up to? I think it was called ? An Unusual Thruhiker?. The title is close if not right on. The guy was from New York. It was published by the AMC. I found the book in a lot of the huts in the Whites. All the best. I?ll see you at the next Gathering. I would so like to meet all the people on this list.Thank you to everyone who has said that they care about this issue too Maybe we?ll meet at one of the Gatherings in the future when we can have them again. Or at a ruck. Or even better on a long trail. All I?m getting to do now is day hike. And do my urban hikes. Just used up another pair of trail runners urban hiking on concrete over the last month and a half when I finally had had it with the lock down and getting fat.Mask in hand for quick deployment, I really know my neighborhood now and the streets when I have to step into them to get around other early morning hikers. LA county is experiencing another spike of Covid 19. This whole mess is just getting worse in some of California?s counties. Especially where I grew up in Imperial county. It?s now the out of the way sparsely populated places that are being hit. Imperial county has few of the resources that the wealthier counties have. Luckily the governor is sending in mobile health units to help. Hoping that will keep the death and suffering down. In LA county if you give blood you can get a free antibody test. The Red Cross needs blood and they are using antibodies to treat Covid 19 patients. I?m off to day hike next to real pine trees Everyone have a great day Marmot Sent from my iPhone > On Jun 26, 2020, at 3:34 AM, jklmck wrote: > > ?Ever heard.....If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.No one is telling you how to think, feel or live your life.
