I started in the middle of CA, and have completed Crabtree Meadows to Castella/ Dunsmuir/ Route 5. Last year I finally made it to Campo and hiked from there to Big Bear Lake. I did that section from the end of May to mid-June, and to tell you the truth the sun of California kills me. I am use to the 'green tunnel' of the east. Towards the end of next May I will pick up where I left off at Big Bear. I would like to fill in this gap to Crabtree Meadow (and do Whitney one more time), but that is probably unrealistic since I only get about three weeks for each section. Still, perhaps our paths will interest along the way. I'll be glad when I am done with the desert, I would probably feel differently about it if I could just get out there earlier in the season, but I cannot. Just want to make sure you know that you have some great sections in front of you that I would gladly hike again. My best to everyone, Scott Stimpson "I watch the list regularly--soon will be continuing my section hikes northward. When you and I hiked in 2010, it was deep snow for much of the trail from Cottonwood all the way to Canada as late as late June. That year, I had to get off trail for several weeks in May and toward the end of the month I drove to several of the northern passes, and from Stevens south, found deep snow everywhere I went. I was hoping on something other than the High Sierra for a return point on the trail, and couldn't find it. I just slogged through the stuff for 4+ weeks with Mango, Plain Slice, Little Engine and Smiles, which was wonderful, if hard as hell! Many people we know jumped north to Shasta and attempted to hike south, but were turned around by the impassible trail after several days of snow and blowdowns. So much simply depends on the winter weather, which hasn't happened yet. If you've got an open schedule, and want pleasant hiking, I'd shoot for late June, early July as a usual time for basically clear sailing and I'd start from Tuolumne Meadows as the blow downs in a typical year are not as bad north of Tuolumne, and can be awful in the Southern Cascades. It'll give the trail crews time to clear those northern trails before you get there. How exciting that you're finishing the trail! Let me know when you get to the Tahoe Region just in case I'm around. I'm hoping for the GDT this summer, but if I'm in town, I'd love to catch up. The PCT-L Archives are working again and hikers are communicating again. As of October 28, 2018 there was only 1 post, the October 1 post by Mike, listed in the October Archives which let me to post my October 28 message. There were? o? posts on the Archives between October 1 & October 28. This is evidence that a lot of PCT-L members, like me, follow the "LIST" via the Archives rather than via their e-mail. I know most of my "old time, hard-core, hiking buddies follow the list via the Archives. I bet there must be other list members that, like me, probably thought the list died on October 1 when no more posts appeared in the Archives after October 1. Brick, you may want to send a message to the old time list members to remind those, who like me, follow the list via the Archives and assumed the list died, that the list is alive & kicking and the Archives are working again. That may "rejuvenate" the List to its former glory by increased participation by those list members who may have thought the list died October 1. Although, some of the old timers may have already died between October 1 and October 28. At 78 I am still a "Spring Chicken"...but Switchback, who I believe may be around 98, may not be around anymore. He,he,he,he.....forgive me Switchback,...I could not help myself,...it's not my fault...the devil made me do it. Ok, you say, simple. Get dropped off at Jawbone Canyon Road and the PCT and hike SB for three days, 12 miles per day (kind of my limit at age 74). Yes, but that's also two nights on the trail, and no water till at least Golden Oaks Spring (20 miles south of Jawbone Canyon Road) and that was running slow on 10/18. Hopefully only because of sediment in the line. But what if it's dry? Does anyone want to go with me? We could park one car at Highway 58 (Cameron Road Exit) where it would be up and out of sight of the highway, then drive the other car up Jawbone Canyon Road to the PCT. I know, I know, then there will be the tedious drive back up Jawbone Canyon Road (mostly dirt road, but fairly well maintained, possible in a two wheel drive sedan, but I have a AWD SUV) at the end to retrieve the car we left there.
