It's particularly valuable to overseas hikers - bear can logistics are a big stressor for some. Coordinating with you, they get a delivery to KM or elsewhere, and mail it back to you when they are done. I lend several, but I have already committed them to 2019 overseas hikers. I would be happy to take on your bear canister for this purpose permanently if you don't think you will ever need it again. The first time in 1965 when the whole 1st Marine Division shipped out to Vietnam during the first major combat ground forces build up. Sorry to hear that your hiking days are over but, it happens to all of us sooner or later. I noticed that my hiking stamina is not what it used to be 10-15 years ago. 10-15 years ago when I was going for the JMT unsupported records I trained to stay in shape doing 25 loops daily going up and down a 86 steps stair well from a parking lot to a Student Dorm at a college in my neighborhood wearing my backpack and "Waffle Stumper" hiking boots. I had not done that for a year or so and decided to try it again a few days ago. Unfortunately, after 10 loops I decided I had enough of it. See what I mean?....25 loops where not a problem at all in my mid 60's but 10 loops seemed harder at age 78 than 25 loops at age 60. The list will still appreciate your vast trail knowledge and humor so keep it coming Switchback. I am glad to hear that you will still be riding your trike to the Mountains. May I suggest that you trade the trike for one of those German World War II Side Winder Motorcycles so poor Mrs. Switchback can sit safely in the Side Winder, instead of? hanging? on to dear life on the back seat, while you are hotroding in the mountains. My New?Year's promise is to ride my trike up into the mountains twice a month at least. It will be hard to give up my Z-Pack cuben gear, but I guess I have to do it, since I cannot walk too far anymore. Anyway, when I am out on the trike I like to stay at luxury motels with indoor pools and hot tubes.? :-) Cheers, Switchback the Road Pirate --- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus From laurie_h1234 at yahoo.com Sun Dec 30 08:45:21 2018 From: laurie_h1234 at yahoo.com (Laurie Hallum) Date: Sun, 30 Dec 2018 14:45:21 +0000 (UTC) Subject: [pct-l] Trail culture In-Reply-To: <4F352538-7D2D-4392-9D4E-B70E6F1F1A4E@gmail.com> References: <4F352538-7D2D-4392-9D4E-B70E6F1F1A4E@gmail.com> Message-ID: <257770521.3825493.1546181121899@mail.yahoo.com> ? ? ?I have enjoyed reading the many informative and enlightening posts on the List from those with so much hiking/backpacking experience, and even found the disputes curious. ?I found others whose feet grew an extra shoe size as did my feet after long distance hiking. ?Snack and food ideas have been wonderful. ?I missed the posts when the List was temporarily not working for me.? ? ?I have connected with several hikers through the List looking for rides in Northern California and have given them transport. ?I even found the the Weed Greyhound Bus Station. ?We'd share stories and experiences, and enjoy the common interest of hiking the PCT. ?I get so uplifted and owe it to the List contributors.? ? ?The idea that Sunshine suggested about sharing hiking/backing stories on the List I feel is a great path. ?It could create interest and fun reading to experienced hikers as-well-as new comers. ?We just need people to contribute their stories like I just did. ?I know that I could and will share other stories. ?It's a connection.Happy trails,Lady Pegasus On Wednesday, December 26, 2018, 6:44:25 PM PST, Sabrina Harrison wrote: I was just on a road trip telling my daughter about trail angels and towns. Yes Brick, Chile's new 1,700 mile "Route of Parks Trail" through 17 national parks from Puerto Monttin in the North to Cape Horn in the South, which was made possible by the donation of millions of acres of land by conservationist Douglas Tomkins and his wife will be, without question, one of the most spectacular "Long Trails in the world and as a result, hopefully, reduce the traffic on our overcrowded, beloved PCT. Having recently spend some time in New Zealand I would like to point out that New Zealand has spectacular mountains worth hiking. And, there is also our own Hawaii with some spectacular and challenging hiking opportunities. I know some of you will say "what is so challenging about hiking on a sandy beach in the shade of Palm Trees? I say there is more to Hawaii than just sandy beaches and Palm Trees. Kaua'i, the little Island is home to Waimea Canyon, the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. Hawaii, the big Island is home to Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, the tallest mountains in the world. I can hear it already..."does that fool not know that Mt. Everest is the tallest mountain in the world"???? NOT SO!!!...Mt. Everest is the highest above sea level, but rises only 11,929 feet from its 17,100 foot or base to a total elevation of 29,029 feet above sea level. Mouna Kea rises 33,464 feet from its foot or base, 19,668 feet below sea level, to 13,796 feet above sea level. Mouna Loa rises 32,768 feet from its foot or base, 19,668 feet below sea level, to 13,100 feet above sea level. So you see Mt. Everest's summit is higher above sea level only because its foot or base, where the mountain actually starts, is already 17,100 feet above sea level While Mouna Kea's & Mouna Loa's foot or base, where they start is 19,668 feet below sea level. So, in realty Mauna Kea and Mouna Loa are much taller than Mt. Everest but Mt. Everest's summit is higher above sea level only because of the difference in height of their foot or base where the mountain begins it's rise. I am sure you guys understand that why, when I realized the above, I just had to climb those mountains. So, if you guys should want the satisfaction of having climbed the tallest mountains in the world, head for Hawaii. BTW...another good thing about hiking Hawaii,...after you come down from the mountains you can relax in the shade of a Palm Tree on a sandy beach, slurping Margarita's and watching bikini clad surfer girls strolling along the beach...much more pleasant than rolling around in the dirt drinking river water. WORD OF WARNING!...watching bikini clad surfer girls can be very stressful, especially to older 78 year old guys like me...and Switchback. The particular characteristics of interest are that * it only happens while backpacking after a few days (hence food or water or physical activity are key) * it only happens to you, not to others in your group with the same diet and physical activity * it stops as soon as you stop backpacking. If your experience fits these parameters, you might be able to help others. Take a look at http://pcnst.oakapple.net/ibs.txt which is currently a discussion between two sufferers. If you have positive experiences to share about causes, preventions, and treatments, please let me know and I will add your data to the discussion there. David Hough
