  In my opinion it doesn't matter whether there are rules or not.  We 
can feel a higher calling, experience being a part of the larger 
environment/world, and act ethically to honor the earth we walk on. 
Building fires outside of survival situations on a trail that sees a 
couple thousand people a year is unethical.
