Karen--
Sierra City is small, but in season there is a fair amount of activity. The City is very hiker friendly. Example: I came off the trail and intended to walk the mile or so to town; I got less than 100 yards before I was offered a ride by a local. First thing he asked: "where do you want to go, the church, post-office or store?"
I arrived mid-day and expected to overnight at the church side yard (they allow free camping, and the public bathroom next store has a free cold water shower). While enjoying a beer and a 1 pound burger at the general store I chatted up people and within an hour had a ride to Truckee where my car was parked. If you are going to hit the road and thumb it, early morning has much less traffic than later in the day.
You will most likely need at least two hitches to get back to Donner. Hitch down to Truckee, which has a lot of activity and is outdoor oriented as well so rides to the trailhead should present themselves. Also, the trailhead is less than 10 miles from the town, so you could take a cab if you don't feel like waiting. Lots of good tourist food in Truckee!
You can also leave a car in Truckee for a week or so. They have several parking lots by the train station that are specifically for long-term parking. (I think the signs said 1 week limit; I was going for 10 days so alerted the police. They politely told me they could care less, but thanks for letting them know.) You could cab to the trail head at the start of your hike and when the hitch drops you in Truckee you are done. If it helps, there is bus service to Reno from Truckee.

Subject: [pct-l] Sierra City/Donner Pass hitch
How difficult is it to get a ride from Sierra City to Donner pass? I'm planning a section hike and trying to figure out how I'll get back to my car if I park at the Donner Pass trailhead.
