Ned, you might want to add(although  I know you'll get to it) that real crampons are designed for quite ridged boots.  Even trying to toe (front point) on a serious slope would be sketchy without the proper support.  Most mountaineering boots are extremely stiff.  Few "backpacking" boots are designed to support a real mountaineering crampon.
