[pct-l] Washington Section Hike

Thanks Mango and David for your responses.

The plan is firming up to hike southbound section "H" White Pass (2292) to Cascade Locks (2144) and if time permits section "G" to Government Camp (2089). The train no longer works well so I am hoping to find a safe place to leave a car, either in the Portland area, Packwood, or Government Camp for about 2 weeks starting 8/23 or 24. I would then use hitch and public transport to connect the dots.

If you have a spot or know of one I would be glad to pay for the privilege of leaving my car there.

Thanks.

Herb

Hitching to Portland would be a whole lot easier from Cascades Locks than from Trout Lake. IIRC, there is a bus into Portland from CL. Good luck. Mango

Help!

I am (was) planning a southbound section hike in Oregon, specifically McKenzie Pass (1981) to Fish Lake (1770), using the train to get to Chemult/Bend then hitch to the trail head. Exit at Fish Like, then hop on the train at Klamath Falls to get home. The highlight was to be Crater Lake, but due to the Spruce Lake and Blanket fires in Section C, most of Crater Lake National Park is currently closed, including the Rim Trail. I guess I can hitch around the closure, but am considering a different itinerary and jut do Crater Lake another time when the park is open and the air clear.

An idea is to stay on the train into Seattle and bus to North Bend, then hitch to Snoqualmie Pass (2390). Hike down to Trout Lake (2226) and then hitch to Portland to catch a train home. Alternatively, trail to Centralia, bus to Packwood, hop in at White Pass (2292) and exit at Cascade Locks to hitch to Portland. I would be on trail 8/24 to 9/5.

Any comments on 1) snow/trail conditions for these sections of Washington in late August. Take micro spikes/ice axe??; and/or 2) travel logistics. Are the proposed hitches feasible? Difficult to get out of Trout Lake?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

Herb
