Permethrin is a great product to treat you clothing (e.g. Sawyer, good for 6 washings) or buy already treated clothes (70 washings), but I don't recommend buying more than the 0.5% formulation that is approved by EPA for that purpose. Insectshield owns the patent  and licenses it out to lots of vendors including Ex Officio and many others. They will also treat your clothes for you (http://www.insectshield.com/IS_Your_Own_Clothes/default.aspx). They are hiker friendly and helping produce a tick awareness video for the AT. It is safe to wear treated shirts and pants next to your skin, but they don't recommend underwear! Much more info on their website.
