Until you cross the northern boundary of the park and thereby exit Yosemite
NP. 

Beyond that, you are not REQUIRED to carry one, but that does not mean the
NEED to carry one ends there. Bears cannot (or will not) read the signs.
Many hikers carry until Sierra City.

The Eldorado National Forest's Desolation Wilderness Area west of South Lake
Tahoe also requires either bear cans or the counter-balance hanging of food
bags.

Bear proof food storage containers are available for free rental from the
Taylor Creek Visitor Center or the LTBMU Supervisor's Office.
