Do you guys realize that you don't need a thru hiker permit to thru hike?

The permit is only a convenience so that you don't need to get permits
for each jurisdiction. This really is only an issue in the Sierra
Nevada.

Technically, you need a free non-quota "visitors permit" for the first
section of the trail from Campo to the north limit of the Descanso
Ranger District. BTW, you will not find this requirement anywhere
online. It seems to be secret.

Then you need a permit for the Wilderness sections of San Jacinto,

Then after that, you don't need a permit till past KM South, and you
are able to get ONE non-quota permit starting and KM that is good
through Interstate 80, and after that the permit issue is pretty lax.
