[pct-l] advice about my hike

You should be able to make contact once a week with little problem on the
PCT because once a week you will be getting a resupply somewhere, and most
towns have cell service. You may find a week or so where you can't get
service in a few parts of the trail - like Yosemite.

Most people that have thru hiked the PCT have not used a GPS. They have
carried maps and a compass. You should have maps and a compass even if you
have a GPS. Halfmile's maps are great for doing the PCT. A GPS is just a
nice device, not worth the weight to me on the PCT, although it can be
very useful in the Sierra if you are traversing lots of snow. Other than
that is it mostly a toy that dare I say it - "people carry because of their
fears".

Personally, when I carry a phone, I only turn it on in town to call home,
and late at night to write my journal. But when I turn it on for
journaling that is all I use if for - I don't check email or messages or
anything else - I'm out on the trail to get away from that stuff. That
stuff can wait until I get to town. YMMV, HOYH, etc

Enjoy the trip, it is a great adventure.
