That's a nice hike; I've done it. It's not all downhill; there are a couple
of nice climbs in there, particularly the climb out of Death Canyon. Be sure
to fill a water bottle from Death Canyon Creek before you start up. It will
also get hotter the further south you go.

I have not done any desert hiking. I have completed the JMT. One trip I
have planned is to start at Cottonwood Pass and go south to Walker Pass,
this way I work into the desert, and its downhill. Hope I can continue on
to Tehachapi in the same trip. And when it's not too hot.
