Add my voice to using a bear canister. Its part of a LNT ethic and wilderness ethic. Used to be Sierra bears were a problem stealing food and harassing hikers. Bears then pay the price with death by ranger. Because of the rule requiring canisters, the problem has largely gone away. Don't be that guy (or girl) who ruins it for the bears and the rest of us. Knowing you need to canister all of your food suggests that most hikers can't make it from KM to VVR, especially with ice axe and the rest of snow gear. Who wants to carry a 40+lb pack in those conditions anyway? PS: if caught, the backcountry rangers will ticket you with a significant fine. But your real motivation should be to protect the resource.
