Another reason--not mentioned in the article--as to why hikers who did
treat their water actually may have had a slightly higher rate of
water-born illness is that they are the hikers who would feel safer
actually trying to purify stagnant water, while hikers who are not treating
their water would be more likely to use only flowing water.
