[pct-l] Pack weight

Oh so true. Some things you just carry for emergencies and pray you'll never
need. Much of the Ten Essentials falls into that category.

An ice axe and crampons are dead weight UNTIL you encounter that unexpected
high angle snowfield in front of you that you can't get around. Without
them, your choices are to either turn back or by continuing, to risk a fall.

A first aid kit is dead weight ....... unless/until someone gets hurt.

An emergency fire starter kit is dead weight ....... until you and
everything else is soaking wet and you're getting hypothermic.

The list goes on.

Yes, we carry our fears.

Some of those "never used in two weeks items" will be critical when you do
need them.
