Hello Brian,

Excellent idea!

I live in L.A., not far from Aqua Dulce. Have been at their home a few
times, the first was a stay going through in 2000 then later grew to know
them through their business as well. I also have a small chapter of my book,
"Trekking Along..." the PCT (2003) on that experience at "Hiker Heaven.
Might you give me your address, I'll send you a copy.

I'll be glad to help, lead, or follow in whatever way I can. In any
event, count on me putting in the second $100.

....I would love to see a farewell party...I think it would be awesome for
Donna... to do one more year, the grand finale! Maybe a big giant
potluck and everybody is scheduled different days, times , whatever... I would
love to hear your ideas ... The mother of all kick off parties and
Reunion.. Lol. Needs to be a goodbye farewell party:). ! She and Jeff
definitely deserve it

Besides hands and face, on the PCT, your feet will be black from soil each
day, even with gaiters. You need to clean them at night to protect your
sleeping bag and to clean and repair any blisters. Another priority is the
groin to prevent chafing. Speed

We hikers don't smell out on the trail. We smell only when we get to
town.

Eric did a good job of describing my own routine, so no need to repeat it.

I will highlight his comment about not using soap, though. Campsuds and
other such products are not nearly as biodegradable and eco-friendly as the
manufacturer might lead you to believe. You don't need it. Just leave it at
home. It seems like a small thing, but every little bit of attention to
these details helps keep the backcountry pristine for those who follow us down
the trail.

If there's water available, I'll rinse everything out every couple of
days,
no soap. That's sufficient to keep everything from getting truly
disgusting. It doesn't totally get rid of the smell but honestly, after a
while hiker smell starts to smell less offensive and more natural.

I do wipe down my arms, face, and torso every night before bed, even if
it's
just with a tiny bit of water on a bandana. That helps me sleep much
better, for some reason.

I know everybody is sick of hearing the reason why blah blah blah blah....
It's been beat to death . But above and beyond that I would love to see a
farewell party.. Don't think the kick off would be appropriate but I think
it would be awesome for Donna to do one more year , the grand finale!
Maybe a big giant potluck and everybody is scheduled different days, times

! She and Jeff definitely deserves it ! I want to see Donna and
Jeff on the front page of backpacker magazine ! .. I'll toss in the first
hundred bucks. $ " panama"

I use Solomon trail runners. Shoe life depends a little on conditions.
Lots of rain and stream wading and the upper part wears quicker. Rarely
have the treads wear before the upper gives out. Average is probably 400
to 500 miles.

As a wise man once told me 'bathing is over rated.' When you are hiking 20
plus miles from sun up to sun down, cleaning self and clothes just doesn't
seem to matter so much. Being female, I did sometimes wipe down my lone
pair of panties with a wet wipe.
In the desert, water is for drinking not washing. Don't waste or polite
it.
The average time between re supplies is about 5 days probably. You can
wait and clean up there.
