[pct-l] Powerhouse Fire Closure

The link failed to the USGS map. Maybe someone could help me with the best route. Is there a place to park a horse trailer near mile 493, Maxwell Trail Camp? I would need to park it and someone would move it to our next spot, but I'm still not sure where that will be. My maps are so small I can't read the numbers on the FS roads. My major concern is a place to camp with water for the horses. If we carry our saddlebags, about 15 miles is good for a day. If we can meet our trailer, then 20 miles is good since we won't have to carry the weight of feed. I'm open to any ideas anyone may have. Our goal is to get to Hwy. 58 on this stint. We have people who can move our trailer, I just need to know where to tell them to go.

I see what you are saying about going up Shake Canyon. A bit more then a mile of old trail and cross country will not be bad and it would be shorter then taking 7N23 until it hits the PCT. So Shake Canyon will be the way I also go.

Actually I looked at the topo and USFS maps and I misspoke. (The topo map is available at the USGS website, or you can download it directly at http://ims.er.usgs.gov/gda_services/download?item_id=5636801)

7N23 isn't the same as Shake Canyon, it is west of Shake Canyon, and it does cross the PCT.

Road 7N34 leading into Shake Canyon is about 1000 yards before 7N23, street address is roughly 21025 Pine Canyon Road, and there is a good view of that trail leaving the road on Google Street view. I have not idea what the trail condition in Shake Canyon is like, but It's a mile as the crow flies from the road to the PCT, and 700' elevation gain.

So for me I'm planning on maybe 11 to 12 miles of road hiking, getting off the PCT at 41291 San Francisquito Canyon Road (mile 478), then getting back on at 21025 Pine Canyon Road and walking up Shake Canyon past Upper Shake Canyon campground at rejoining at mile 494. You could hike further on the PCT past SF Canyon Road, but you can't exit without turning around--it's a cul-de-sac.

Thank you, Ravens for finding this. I was not thrilled about doing a straight-across-the-Antelope-Valley walk down a long road.

From what I can see, it's mile 481 (or waypoint RD0481) to to roughly mile 491.8. It does look like 7N23 (also called the Shake Canyon Trail) heads up from Pine Canyon Rd/Elizabeth Lake Road, and intersects the PCT in the area previously closed.

http://articles.latimes.com/2001/jul/15/travel/tr-22545 has a short writeup on that trail.

This doesn't mean a whole lot to me. Can anyone interpet it as to what mile markers we are talking about. We hope to pick up our PCT trip in a few weeks from North Fork to Tehachapi.

I was doing some resource on the Powerhouse Fire and I found the latests
          Forest Service closure notice.

          http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprd3820983.pdf

What I found interesting is that they have made the closure smaller and it
looks as if you can get back on the PCT from the dirt road Forest Rte
7N23. IF this is true it would cut almost 8 miles off of the road walk.

Can others check me on this?
