PYW,

There are some nuances and all hikers that would be considered thru-hikers would not always present themselves in the calendar based numbers.  Consider the following situations;

1. A SOBO hiker, border to border
2. A hiker who starts somewhere other than a border and hikes to the border, then returns to their starting point to continue toward the opposite border. (example might be a hiker starting in the north and hiking to the KO and then returning to continue a NOBO.
3.  A flipper

So only the PCTA has total transparency for the permits issued and the various situations. The only conclusion is that x number of hikers have applied for a border to border NOBO thru-hike. There are more thru-hikers out there.

Kind of a slow day at the hacienda...
so I counted the number of applicants that are going for a thru hike this year,
adding up the Feb., Mar., Apr., May, Jun., and Jul., tabulations to date:
3 days and some change has elapsed time wise.
Feb. 4th was the first day one could apply for a permit online.

Feb.- # 47
Mar.- # 115
Apr.- # 845 Dates: 01, 15, 20 & 22 filled to capacity (50.)
May- # 152
Jun.- # 87
Jul.- # 43

Total to date: # 1,289 thru permit applicants.

If nothing else... there’s 1,289 astute website watchers chomping at the bit!
