[pct-l] Shelters!

I slept out in the open until I got to the 1st permanent source of water,
namely the Kern River just south of Kennedy Meadows (south). From there on
I was in a tent every night, not for the rain, but to ensure I slept
without interruption from the bugs. I was originally just going to use a
tarp (8*10 sheet of plastic guyed at the corners), but the concern about
bugs overrode. I was glad for my choice. I used an extra long tent from
http://www.lightheartgear.com/ using my hiking poles as tent poles.

Do not, I repeat, do not camp under the oak trees in the area of Burney
Falls/Hat Creek Rim! There are small brown ants that drop out of the oak
trees. If they get wrapped into your tent, they will burn holes in the
tent in their attempt to get free. I had to patch about 100 holes in my
tent when I got to Ashland.
