I believe you could safely camp near Campo although I don't think there is
much in the way of good camping near there. You will be close to roads and
housing so there will be traffic noise - probably from border patrol
vehicles during the night.
You should be able to start with doing less than a 30 miles first
day. Most people do 20 to Lake Morena. They have water and a shower which
is a nice way to end your first day on the trail.
Unless you are already in trail shape I would recommend starting with lower
miles to avoid overuse injuries. HYOH, YMMV.
