Ultralight pack weights in the 1940's were commonly dependent on ole fashion woodcraft. Such basics as sleeping mats and tent poles were cut from tree boughs and poles. Having read up on DIY gear from this period, the only conclusion is that it is not ethical to duplicate these methods.
