I've "heard and seen it all", too - and the "weight" argument for NOT using a canister is shallow and shows a lack of understanding of (or sympathy for) the primary reason for the canister requirements and selfish short-sightedness.

Well put. Rangers do NOT liking having to shoot bears that have become habituated to human food. They should make the backpacker that was too selfish to carry a bear can shoot the bear.

The point of the canister is not to protect your food from the bear, but to protect the bear from your food. A fed bear is a dead bear.
