[pct-l] Data Book Discrepancies

Jalan,

When the Wilderness Press began to print their guides the PCT was still being developed, so it made sense to only give distances between points as the overall mileage was in flux. For example, the first guide started well west of Campo. When the temporary trail was shifted to Campo the route was a rode walk that used paved roads and dirt to get to Cibbits Flats. So it didn't make any sense to refer to overall mileage points.

What I find annoying is that many of the recent crop of through hikers only know locations by mileage numbers and not by major landmark names. They should be able to recognize major place names like, Belden, Burney Falls, I-5, Crater Lake, etc. They should also be able to reflect on the names of local features that they pass.

               Rob

I have seen other discrepancies as well  (data book, WP guide, half mile. Blacks guides, etcc )it would be nice to have an agreed upon standard but judging by recent posts , there is some rancor around this subject

I've always been annoyed that the WP guides always refer to distance between points rather than overall mileage points but I guess that makes the data less susceptible to overall changes on the trail length re routes etc

It seems like the PCTA should set the gold standard. If they have apparently the word has not gotten out
