Are you OK with third class rock scrambling?

Mt. Muir is just a short distance of the trail just below Whitney. Much better summit than Whitney!

>From Vidette Meadow you can follow use trail to the Vidette Lakes. From thre climb of Deerhorn Mountain is one of the best in the Sierra.

Mt. Gould can be done from Kearsarge Pass, really nice views.

>From Rae Lakes you can tour Sixty Lakes Basin. Mt. Cotter is a short fun climb. If you're feeling really brave Mt Clarence King is a real thrill, but you'll probably want a rope.

Split Mountain is a 14,000' peak that can be done from the Upper Basin easily.

>From Evolution Lake Mt. Spencer is a short class 2 scramble up slabs to a short section of class 2 ridge. Fun, and nice views of the region.

>From Evolution you could go cross-country and use trail to Darwin Basin. September might be late, but the lowers there can be spectacular.

>From Vidette Meadows you can follow use trail up to the Vidette Lakes, a very pretty cirque composed of East Vidette Mountain, Deerhorn Mountain and West Vidette. You can head up the third class rib to the top of Deerhorn. Details in Secor.

>From Tuolumne Meadows cruis down to Glen Aulin, a really nice hike.

Secor's book is worth a study.

I am planning to hike the JMT this September but would like to get off the
beaten bath a bit. I am looking for suggestions for side excursions off the
JMT.

Thanks,
