Thanks again for the report.  I have concerns about the snow.  Where can I find Devil's Peak and the "7-Mile Trail" alternate?  I'm having trouble finding them on Half Mile's or Gutthooks maps.

Thanks!

I finished Ashland to Crater Lake last week. A couple of notes:

1) Water sources throughout were flowing, with only seasonal streams really low.

2) To confirm: the South Brown Mountain Shelter well does, indeed, have water. You have to give it 15-20 really good, full pumps to get it flowing, but it comes out copiously and cold.

3) Mosquitos from Fish Lake to Crater Lake are evil.

4) Devil's Peak had snow on the north side which required glissading. It was a little steep for me, so I backtracked to the 7-Mile Trail alternate (which isn't really discussed anywhere, but which is lovely). It, too, was snowed in on the north slope, but crosscountry rock-climbing got me down to the trail.

5) The Green Springs Inn has fantastic food and is worth the walk; hitching is also fairly easy, as it's a well traveled stretch of highway. Fish Lake Resort cabins are definitely $75 a night at the cheapest (as confirmed by Deb, the owner), but the staff is very friendly and the food good.

Have a fine hike, Bill.

Thanks for that water update Dennis.  I'll be starting at Callahan's on the 16th and will follow any future reports.
