No doubt the chrome dome is the most advantageous but any umbrella can be used. Some people actually have more length of neck and head to make some umbrellas work with pack. I use an REI ultralight trekking umbrella but that didn't "fit" Rock Star. We finally found one with a long enough handle at the Safeway in Winter Park, Co. It even matched her shirt in color.

Once after finally getting hers while hiking in rain with our umbrellas on the CDT", I expressed regret to Rock Star that I hadn't put on my raincoat too and she said, "We don't need no stinkin' raincoats. We got umbrellas." I laughed a lot. She became an umbrella convert.
