I can certainly vouch for this.  As llama packers, we have excess 
carrying capacity.  Every day we eat supplies, so we have extra space. 
Therefore, we carry out any trash or found gear (clearly lost or 
abandoned gear, that is)that we encounter on the trip.  We have found a 
multitude of tent stakes over the years.
