[pct-l] Completing Canada permit application form

Meike,

1. "Appearance" is apparently asking for skin tone or racial
identification. Many hikers put in "Caucasian," "black," and so on, and
these were accepted.

2. ETA is "Estimated time of arrival" and ETD is "estimated time of
departure." They want to know when you think you'll get there and when
you'll leave. I understand there is some flexibility here.

3. Canada is very concerned that you be able to pay for your food and
lodging while in their country. (I actually had to go through insane
amounts of bureaucracy to get my student visa approved because I did not
have the funds to cover a three-year stretch at the University of Toronto
with me when I arrived.) Listing some amount of cash and if you have a
credit card is what they're looking for.

An amusing anecdote: as a grad student, a friend of mine and I wanted to
spend a week in BC to work on our theses in seclusion. The border agent
asked to see our funds, then lectured me for ten minutes about the fact
that I had "too many credit cards." The people of Canada have been the
kindest, most helpful people I've ever known, save for the border agents...
