[pct-l] Filter vs. Chlorine dioxide

I've been planning on carrying my Katadyn hiker pro plus chlorine dioxide tablets as backup if/when filter replacement is needed. Now I'm reading on other forums about folks carrying *only* chlorine dioxide (aquamira or the like) with a sediment strainer (coffee filter). Anybody here with experience using tablets/drops only and ditching the filter weight?
