[pct-l] Start time

The one that got list in the snow was probably the 2005 hiker. The place he lost his way (missed a junction just south of San Jacinto).
I'm looking at those mountains right now and they are bare, even at higher elevations. There was a few inches snow a few days ago but it melted off in two days.
What snow will exist next week or next month is unknown. There is nothing there now. Hence everyone's advice to start early (due to likely dry water sources) but be ready to change plans if changing conditions exceed your competence.

It really depends on your experience and your ability to make decisions. The two people I know of that died on the PCT both got into trouble trying to get out of snow on side trails. One ,I believe, was lost. The other was trying to get out and slipped. It takes a lot of personal inner strength to bail out when things get bad before they get too bad. Getting in over your head is easy to do. Be careful out there. These trails are all doable by novice hikers. But, you have to be able to understand what is happening to you. Marmot
