One way to improve this depressing situation is to stealth camp. I  
did this in/near at least one town. Spent the day reading a paperback  
book. Very relaxing, almost a guilty pleasure.

In some locations you can spend a leisurely day making progress on a  
small segment of the trail, sleeping halfway in the middle (those  
locations with two ways to get into town, such as Big Bear or  
Government Camp.)
