[pct-l] self arrest poles

In 2005 I hiked with two regular trekking poles.  During snow crossings 
I'd shorten one of the poles and bury to the hilt with every step.  I'd 
only pull it out to place again when I had myself firmly balanced in a 
three point contact.

I did fall once and stopped what would have been a nasty slide in a 
matter of an arms length.  Wouldn't work with really hard ice though...
