Only as a grammarian could I be thus interested in this conversation. As a
grammarian, I have to fight for "the Sierra," though I'm really not going
to come down on someone for adding an errant "s."
I give you the excerpt from the 1947 Sierra Club Bulletin that takes on
this very argument, which gives a very, very grudging acceptance to
"Sierras," then immediately takes it back:

It's good to know that our predecessors liked to get up in arms over such
things just as much as we apparently do...
