This is Jamie Hogan with BearVault.
In the past there were instances of unusable food being dumped by
backpackers in the mountains after their Ursacks were attacked by bears,
rendering the food inedible. Those Ursacks had survived the encounter, but
the hikers would not eat the resulting damaged food (described as porridge
due to bear saliva mixing with food) and some of them dumped the food,
defeating the whole purpose of the bear resistant containers keeping food
from bears.
It seems a basic requirement of a bear container must be to protect the
food in a sanitary, edible condition. This seems a common sense,
reasonable requirement that no one can reasonably take issue with. If the
food is in an inedible conditions, the protective device has not done it's
job...any of the rigid bear canisters from the many vendors will do this;
the Ursack does not.
Just sayin......
