Don't forget with a ice axe you need to know how to use it correctly.  And
if you're in snow you need to carry it correctly and that's not on your
pack.  Hiking poles can often be used for the same purpose.  If you haven't
trained with an ice axe I would say leave it at home it's just extra
weight.
