Many in not most use trail runners. Many find trail runners inadequate, I 
did. It isn't a heavy boot or trail runner choice, there are a many 
intermediate options.
The question you need to answer is what will work for you. The best way to 
answer that question is by testing the shoes you intend to use on training 
hikes and walks. Start now!
If you currently don't have any hiking shoes a pair of trail runners might 
be a good place to start. If they don't work out try something else.
You think about socks and supportive insoles also.
You have to invest some time and money if you want to maximize you chances 
for success.
