[pct-l] 45 Uses for Trekking Poles on the Trail

That's interesting, Mango, I don't use my pole straps and have even cut them
off in the past! The reason is when I fall on snow and start sliding, if I
don't have control of my pole, it is just another item that can hurt me as I
vault over it or it hits me while going down the snow-slope.

I don't think anyone has mentioned that trekking poles are a great place to
carry a few turns of duct tape, just below the handle. On the AT, I had to
use that duct tape on the poles themselves to keep one of them from
telescoping closed. I have since switched to cam-lock poles and like them
much better.
I also was a victim of straps and handles being chewed down while asleep at
night, also in a Six Moon Design tent. You don't realize how much you depend
on on the straps until they're gone.

Here's one more to add to the list:
- get your center of gravity away from your feet so you fall off that log
and into the creek.

Great List Eric...I love my trekking poles for many of the same reasons!
Here are a few more to add to the list.
- Glue a 2-gram bubble compass to the top for a quick reference and to avoid
carrying a heavier one as backup to SmartPhone compass
- Jam it into the soft ground or amongst rocks to create an off-the-ground
tripod for camera. I screwed just the top of a tripod mount to it which is
very light or I've also just wrapped the legs of my small-light tripod
around the grip.
- Use it to dig cat-holes saving the weight of a small shovel.
