Yes, it's illegal, but what kind of a crime is it? Misdemeanor? Felony?
Infraction? CFR? USFS admin code or regulation? Private property owner's
policy? And just how does one go about performing a citizen's arrest or
physically defending against something if they aren't even knowledgeable
about the type of crime they've seen committed? Do you even know your
citizen's arrest rights for the exact spot that you are when this might
occur? And who are the "most other hikers"? You've done a poll using a
substantial random statistical sampling of trail users in the country?
Where can we see the results of this surely costly and exhaustive study?

Vigilantes are encouraged to consult with a criminal law attorney and carry
their phone number with them at all times. You might need it someday.

Law enforcement may seem lax or nonexistent on the bikes on closed trail
issue, but they *will* investigate an assault or menacing report. Ignore
that at your own peril. Don't call me from jail, I'll not help you one bit,
unless you want me to know that I must distance myself even further from
you than I might have before.
